Göbekli Tepe is an archaeological site located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, approximately 12 kilometers from the city of Şanlıurfa and is considered to be the oldest known temple complex in the world. Dating from approximately 9600 to 9500 years ago, at the beginning of the Neolithic Age, it has profoundly influenced human history and changed the understanding of history as we know it so far. The discovery of Göbekli Tepe showed that hunter-gatherer communities were advanced enough to build complex structures. For this reason, Göbekli Tepe is of great importance not only for Türkiye, but for all humanity.
STRUCTURAL FEATURES AND STONE CARVING
Among the most remarkable features of this complex are the T-shaped monolith stones, ranging in height from 3 to 6 meters. Various animal figures and symbols were carved on these stones. These detailed carvings on the surface of the stones show how advanced artistic expression and symbolic thinking were at that time.
FINDS AND EXCAVATIONS
Göbekli Tepe was first discovered in 1963 by an American and Turkish archaeologist, but serious excavations began in 1995 under the leadership of German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt. The stone tools, animal bones and statuettes recovered during the excavations reveal the complexity and richness of life at this site.
TÜRKİYE AND THE UNIQUENESS OF GÖBEKLİ TEPE
The fact that Türkiye hosts such an important archaeological site further reinforces the deep interest in Turkish culture and history. The unique structure of Göbekli Tepe has announced to the world that Türkiye is not only a land of natural beauty, but also of deep historical and cultural richness.
